O2 Arena praised for carbon emissions cut

London’s O2 Arena has received its highest rating for sustainability following measures to cut its carbon emissions.

It has been handed a ‘highly commended' Greener Arena Certification from sustainability organisation A Greener Future, through measures including a shift to electric vehicles on its site.

Over the last four years the AEG International run site has slashed its carbon emissions per show by 27% and achieved a 26% reduction in emissions per fan attending over the same period.

As well as the transition to EV vehicles it has introduced an electricity Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Ecotricity, and there has been a 31.5% reduction in food service emissions since 2019.

In addition, recycling and composting at the venue increased by 15% over the last year.

"Achieving a Highly Commended Greener Arena Certification is a fantastic milestone for The O2 and reflects years of commitment, innovation and collaboration across the business,” said AEG International director of sustainability Sam Booth.

“Sustainability is embedded into how we operate as a venue, and this recognition demonstrates the progress the team have made in reducing our environmental impact while continuing to deliver world-class live entertainment for millions of visitors every year.

"We've come a long way since beginning this journey in 2022, and while we're proud of what has been achieved, we're equally focused on continuing to drive progress and finding new ways to reduce emissions, minimise waste and support a more sustainable future for the live events industry."

A Greener Future chief executive Clare O’Neil added: “We're really happy to see The O2 achieve "Highly Commended" in the Greener Arena Certification, showing continuous improvements and an unwavering commitment to protect the environment, to care for their staff and visitors, and to be good neighbours in their community."
